TVNZ unable to deal with competition
There are 2 stories on Stuff today, here and here, about calls to break Sky TV up in a manner similar to Telecom.
Adam finds this very interesting and disturbing.
He got Sky many years ago for the news channels as he found what was available on TV3 and TV1 so poor.
Now he finds that he probably watches more on UK TV and the History Channel.
He is fed up with much of the rubbish that passes for programming on TVNZ and to a lesser extent on TV3.
Personally Adam thinks it ideal that sports are on Sky as it means he can avoid watching them.
He would not be looking forward to the Olympics if he only had TVNZ and TV3, as TVNZ will no doubt go totally OTT with it’s coverage.
He would have no problem with there being another pay TV operator.
If Sky TV was broken up could we then avoid subsidising Freeview as there would be no need for a separate platform then.
Adam suggests that these calls have more to do with TVNZ not being able to foot it competitively with Sky.
IN addition, it allows Labour to appear to be championing the consumer by attacking the business community.
In fact Adam suspects we will see more and more talk about public interest and anti-business rhetoric in the coming period prior to the election, plus ongoing attempts to smear National with secret agendas and as a business plaything. It has started already.
