Zimbabwe a real issue, unlike Gaza
Whilst all the moralists are beating themselves up with their anguish over Gaza let us turn our attention elsewhere.
Long after you leave Zimbabwe images linger in the mind, harrowing and ineradicable. An emaciated old woman making “soup” from weeds for her orphaned grandchildren; desperate parents foraging in the bush for a handful of desiccated berries; young men defying crocodiles to catch a handful of tiny fish in the Zambezi; the corpses of cholera victims trussed up in black plastic sheeting; the ubiquitous and debilitated Aids victims; perfunctory funerals in Harare’s cemetery while, all around, fresh graves are dug.
Thus begins a Times article on the plight of the Zimbabwe nation. A problem, which along with Congo and Darfur seems to catch only intermittent attention of media. Gaza painful as it is is a conflict brought about by an administration, the Hamas one, which has chosen for it’s political ends to provoke the current conflict.
Zimbabwe under the thug Mugabe is. in reality. a much greater evil.

Agreed, Adam. I find it appalling how Mugabe’s evil and the Congo atrocities just disappear from the media as soon as a “trendier” conflict is in the offing. There is something dreadfully racist about the way the media appears to find African casualties boring.
Apparently a Butcher starving an entire nation to death to preserve a luxurious way of life for himself and his cronies is nowhere near as interesting as a fairly minor engagement in the middle east.
