Classic Songs #14 – Peggy Sue

January 16, 2009

Great article at The Times on the forthcoming anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death. The 50th anniversary. Great singer, songwriter and all around legend.

Watch this video of Peggy Sue, not just the music- look at the intro and the context. Surreal or what?

One of the great rock songs.

Did you notice the girls in the background didnt move at all during the song? No Top tapping, clapping, or even swaying in time to the music.

It’s said, and indicated in the article, that if Holly had lived, Rock n Roll would have developed differently. Certainly Don McLean thought so because his song American Pie eulogizes Holly’s death as “The day the music died”.

So much of McLean’s lyrics on the direction ring true to me all these years later. If you are a fan of 50s/60s music you can hear the logical transition that was occurring with Holly, Elvis, Cash, Dylan, Baez (who might be said to be Dylans canary). But by the 70s the transition is often lost as the music starts to jangle and the singers get angry..

Can you imagine if someone recorded this today? It would be considered almost …. punk.
