Sloppy Journalism – Part 10

February 3, 2009

The following is a headline on the NZ Herald website, which site is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary. Yet to Adam it is just another example of Sloppy Journalism.

English to talk economy in Australia

Now just what is meant by this headline. Is it meant to mean English will discuss economic issues or does it mean English is to discuss economies in the sense of cost cutting. As it stands it means nothing.

Why use ‘to talk’ – discuss or confer would be more meaningful.

This is yet another sloppy piece of sub-editing by the NZ Herald or is it an outsourced function to a location where English is a second language?

    Ah well spotted pedant.

That is what comes of being in a hurry

I agree with you in principle, but the fact you use “it’s” incorrectly in your first par undermines your credibility somewhat. As a news sub, I can guarantee the headline given was crammed in to the space provided. But even with a luxury of space, indicating the precise nature of the visit would have been impossible. Name the player, name the play, name the place for the play AND name the exact nature of it too? Tough ask for six words. It’s clumsy as it is, but I don’t think expecting a synopsis in a headline is quite fair on the sub involved.
