Quotation for Today, Monday 16 March
When I raised this story on my talkback show, more out of sorrow and anger than any expectation that it would prompt debate, a woman started quoting vast tracts of the Bible at me.
In between she said she wasn’t a Catholic but she wholeheartedly supported the decision because she, too, thought that – and I paraphrase – child rape was better than abortion.
What she said was rape was a lesser crime than murder, but you get the drift. She finished by quoting Genesis and thundering that God said we should go forth and multiply and that proved the girl should have carried the twins to term.
She wasn’t alone. Another (woman) caller said the birth of twins would be a cleansing experience for the girl after the horror of the rape. Cleansing?! We’re talking about a 9-year-old carrying to term twins conceived from rape.
Kerre Woodham in her HoS column writing about the Catholic Church objecting to doctors carrying out a termination on a small 9 year child raped by her stepfather. The child’s mother and doctors were excommunicated, but not the rapist. The Brazilian Church action was upheld by the Vatican. What was of interest was the reaction of some New Zealanders to this as noted in the extract above.

The question is why are most of the worlds religions producing so may radicals now? I don’t believe that there has always been so many of them and it is solely the advances in communication that have highlighted the problem.
I believe that we have become so ‘tolerant’ that we excuse and condone the most outrageous behaviour and consequently, child rape, mass murder, suppression of women, slavery it is seen as culturally acceptable to some groups and accepted by all as what happens in “their culture”.
Look at our own country. Women have to sit at the back of the Marae and not speak. But hey that’s a cultural thing. Never mind that woman fought for decades to change being second class citizens being told where to sit and what to say this its Maori so its OK.
It starts with little things. We keep excusing Islam because they are a peaceful religion (yeah right) the Catholics see the tolerance and go for their prejudices and disgusting practises and we continue to be tolerant because we have set a precedence and on and on it goes.
And yes before you ask. I am intolerant. I am intolerant of cruelty in all forms, bigotry, hate and all religions that say I have to believe what they say I have to believe or they will kill me.
I agree. I am a Christian, but the actions of the Catholic Church in this matter are not Christian.
The Church and anybody who supports their views in this matter should be deeply ashamed of themselves.
Im sorry but the catholics have a pope who was in the Hitler Youth Movement. What more can they expect? And please dont tell me he was just following orders and all of the other boys were doing it. I dont buy it.
He excused the priests who denied the holocost and only went back on that when he was forced to by public opinion.
He is in my opinion the same as the worst in any religious group that there is. Be it Islam, Judism or Christianity.
And the reason I dont follow any organised religion. That does not mean I dont believe in god.
