Newspapers, but not as we know them
Came across a reference to this excellent essay on the future of newspapers and journalism whilst reading this post by Steve Coll in his New Yorker blog on journalism, newspapers and the digital world.
Both repay careful reading. To Adam’s mind there is/was little point in attempting to draw out key points. These two items need reading in their entirety.
In a time when the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is moving to a non-print on-line model. The questions raised in these pieces are important.
Shirky raises questions about who will gather and disseminate news. How will the veracity be checked. Not the simplistic news we see on the TV, but the analytical coverage that people like Adam, his readers and many others rely on.
In the 21st century many basic assumptions that have underpinned our lives will need to change.
