Does James Weir of The Dominion Post read The Inquiring Mind? Only the other day Adam blogged ‘Why not release the Wolak Report’ and what do we find today on the front page of the Business Section of today’s DomPost, but an article by Mr Weir about a draft of said report. Unfortunately the article is not as yet online it would appear.

Adam has typed in a brief extract:-

PART of a long-awaited report into suspected abuse of market power by electricity firms suggests that they may be offering wholesale prices $10 to $20 a unit higher than usual, at peak times, when they can.

The draft report, dated March 13, by leading international power sector academic Frank Wolak of Stanford University, is part of a wider Commerce Commission study that has taken nearly four years, at a cost of $2 million.

You can try and read it here http://rschmal.scripts.mit.edu/EESemPapers/Frank%20Wolak.How%20Do%20Firms%20Exercise.pdf

I say ‘try’ because there are an awful lot of equations and ‘technical’ language…

It’s not a draft of the report, it is a speech he gave at MIT. He gave another in California. However, I think it is reasonable to conclude that it probably forms a chunk of his analysis.

My understanding is that the COm Com will use his analysis to interpret what has been going on rather than publish his report per se.
