What the roofer thinks
2009 April 11
George Packer at The New Yorker has some observations on the state of a world where some seem to find it easier to interact with technology than people.
He describes a fascinating conversation with the guy fixing his roof leak.
The experience is of a piece with this much earlier post by Adam on an article by Nicholas Carr in The Atlantic on whether Google was making us dumber.
Note the description of the ‘yuppie buffer’ an intermediary hired to talk to the repairman rather than the customer dealing directly.

Oh the irony – the technology which makes it easier to communicate electroncially robs us of the skills to do it face to face.
