Humiliation of little tyrants is good
Michael Portillo has an excellent article at The Times on how several petty and not so petty despots have been humbled in both the UK and USA. he notes politicisation of the UK Civil Service and bemoans the proliferation of “special advisors’. He speculates on why Gordon Brown associates with sleaze merchants and allows the erosion of civil liberties.
However, some of his most telling comments are reserved for the hapless Jacqui Smith:-
The home secretary still thinks nothing untoward occurred. Almost every day some new revelation makes her look incompetent or unprincipled or both. It is beyond human understanding how she can bear to go on. If she were a pet, she would be taken to the vet for a painless end. If she were a boxer, the fight would be stopped before she took more punishment. If she were lying between the trenches, some kind soul would deliver the coup de grâce.
Read Portillo’s entire article. Do not think it cannot happen here, as some would say that under SupeHelen we started down the slippery slope. Damian McBride was planning a smear campaign for Labour against the Tories. Remember our election, we saw smear tactics here.

I do not think anyone doubts that many of the policies and approach to government of the last 9 years were drawn from NuLabour.
Just as in NZ, I think the British people have finally woken up and NuLabour are toast whenever Brown finally gets around to calling the general election.
