Colin James on eco-services

April 20, 2009

Adam has now read Colin James column in last Saturday’s Dominion Post some 4 times. He is still not sure if he fully understands it.

The argument seems to be that there could be money in being green.

Adam thinks Mr James is hedging his bets somewhat because it is not a clarion call for job creation through being green, unlike say Barack Obama and Gordon Brown, but more a commentary that NZ may have some chances at generating wealth through eco-services.

Overall Adam thinks the article is really proposing that there is potential in services which capitalise on our expertise. Yet it seems dressed up in some impenetrable verbiage.

The argument seems similar to some point previously made by David Skilling in favour of the weightless economy and required actions re Climate Change.

Off on a tangent is Adam the only one who thinks Colin James website is less than stellar?

HP is undoubtedly correct, that is the Al Gore route to riches. SELL GREEN ! But just don’t expect them to actually practice it or for that matter, for their products to be actually “green” in reality. I’ve just been reading some analysis of how wind generation in Germanyentails having coal plants on stand-by ramping their output up and down, in the process generating more output than if they were operating most efficiently full time. Biodiesel is another good example, elecytric cars may yet turn out to have a lrger overall footprint than conventional, etc, etc. This is no more, and probably no less, than a fully fledged millenial disaster religion in the making, with the masses being exploited by the power and money hungry. Climate change devotees remind me so much of the sort of people who worship at those extremist churches where you (the congregation) are expected to contributed large sums of money plus your devotion, so the leader(s) can feel beloved and live a life of sybaritic luxury. Exploiting the proles is the shorthand.

If preferring policy based on facts rather than emotion; and initiatives which make a positive impact on the environment rather than on someone’s conscience makes me a cynic I’ll plead guilty as charged – though not so keen on the “old” :)

There is money in being green – for the consultants and advisors and pedallers of products which may or may not be green.

But will anything they sell or do have a positive effect on the environment?
