Argentina, Chile or Uruguay
April 22, 2009
We are thinking about going to Buenos Aires in early June, ex Auckland. Has anybody any advice on whether flying Aerolineas Argentina is a good or bad idea. They appear to be the cheapest.
Any advice on where to stay in BA, places to see, good food + drink. Things to buy?
The idea is to have a trip and celebrate our birthdays which are 3 days apart.
Or would Chile or Uruguay be better?

A mi, me gusta mucho Argentina, es mi pais favorito.
We’ve been five times and love the country and its people – but we stay with locals which makes a difference.
Adolf is right about Mendoza, though we were there in January, not June.
We fly Aerolineas Argentina because it’s faster (11 1/2 hours there and 13 home), have always found the staff lovely but it’s not on my list of world’s best airlines.
If you can go to an estancia and have an asado, do; if not you’ll find plenty of cafes and resaurants with parillas – wood fired ovens – which serve fantastic meat.
Watch prices for hotels, sometimes quoted in $US rather than pesos.
If I recall correctly, Homepaddock has recently been in Argentina, and may be well placed to comment on that interesting country.
As for me, a weekend in Taupo is the most I can look forward to….
THanks for the comments.
Hotel advice anyone?
Good bars?
ah the beef- an argentinian bbq is something one never forgets quickly! Nor can one forget flying on Aero Arggghhhh; great service when they actually fly, but the arrival/departure times can bear little resemblance to reality! Beware their precarious financial situation as well; there was talk of flight cancellations with no fare refunds at all (thought this was last year, in fairness).
Buenos Aires is a wonderful city. It combines the best of English, French and Italian architecture. The restaurants are magnificent. The people are chique.
My experience flying Arolineas Argentinas was superb. If you enjoy wines go and spend a week in Mendosa, a city the size of Auckland, tucked up under the Andes in the north west. Take a day trip to the Chilean border and marvel at the sheer rugged grandeur of Los Andes. Go and visit some of the remarkable vineyards.
Spend a week in Bariloche, the Queenstown of Argentina. All the while remember that Argentina is simply a ten times bigger version of Canterbury and Central Otago combined.
You will never ever taste beef like it is cooked in Argentina.
