Auckland Watering Holes
Another parochial list based on when Adam lived there, updated from visits.
Again no especial preference, plus proximity and mood influence selection.
Order is no indicator of preference:-
1 Danny Doolan’s, Irish, Viaduct, reasonable, affable staff whenever Adam has been there
2 Fox’s Ale House, large, well located Viaduct Bar, sporting theme, reasonable staff, prices not totally outrageous
3 Occidental, Vulcan Lane, now a Belgian Beer bar, staff not that interested in customers, a chain feel – unlike the original pub which was a great place with great clientele, many from the newspaper profession
4 Shakespeare, brew pub, used to be OK, have not been for sometime, used to brew good beer
5 O’Hagans Irish Pub, Viaduct area, have had some good times there
6 Bluestone Room, slightly off the beaten track, but have liked this place when visited. Despite the corporate feel.
7 Galbraiths Alehouse, good beer and good pub grub. Been in business a while and a great place to go for a jar or three. As Tina Turner used to say ‘Better than all the rest’
8 Queensferry, Vulcan Lane, historic pub, now re-vamped, but worth a visit provided you recognise what it is, more a venue than a pub.
9 O’Carrols Vulcan Lane, an Irish bar, reasonable ambience, red wines somewhat expensive, but have been to many worse places
10 Brownie’s Bar, Victoria Street West in Auckland is a shop front bar which can be worth a visit as opposed to the glitz and cost of Sky City and the rest thereabouts.

Galbraiths is a great pub. It was my local watering hole when I lived and worked in Auckland. Always took visitors there who enjoyed good beer.
