Indian General Election

May 6, 2009

The Indian general election is underway. The election takes some weeks to complete. The FT has an In-depth section. Given NZ’s desire to conclude an FTA with India and the volatile nature of the Indian relationship with Pakistan; plus long term economic rivalry with China, Adam suggests readers might find some of the material at the FT interesting.

It is interesting to note how resilient Indian democracy has proved. Yet at the same time one family has dominated Indian politics for the last 70+ years – the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.

I always found the fact that some cousins, grandchildren, etc of Nehru and Gandhi kept cropping up in Indian government quite sad. I am not sure this was what Gandhi had in mind. I hope not, because I would like to keep admiring him.
