It was the rules guv!Honest!

How often have we heard this defence.

Some might regard Morten Morland’s cartoon as OTT. Adam does not.

For those of us here in NZ who say it does not happen here. Think, we have a system of Parliamentary largesse as well.

Let us look elsewhere. let us pay our MPs a good salary, indeed an excellent salary. Then let us severely restrict their personal expense claims such as travel, taxis etc.

Now which then minister spent over $27,000 on taxis? Which then political appointee tried to claim a UK pension?

Which Labour MP secured a benefit fo himself when a flight was delayed which was not available to anyone else?

I agree that we need tighter controls on the expenses which can be claimed.

But I worry about increasing the remuneration of MPs and Government ministers. It only encourages the trade unionists and academics to treat parliament as a job for life when what we need is more self made men and women with real life experience. Not dropkicks like the bunch of hangers-on in the Green Party.

Each morning and evening I drive the main route between the airport and the CBD in Wellington (around Evans and Oriental Bays).

It has been interesting to note the increased numbers of Ministerial CR-plate BMWs over the last six months.

I look forward to the release of MP’s travel-expenses.
