Grumbling about protectionism

May 16, 2009

Many times Adam has blogged about protectionism and in particular about the attitude of the USA under the Obama Administration.

Alf Grumble has an excellent post which should be read in full by all of us interested in and concerned about this issue.

He highlights the problems arrising with the so called stimulus legislation in the US, enacted by the most protectionist Congress in recent history and how it is being interpreted.

It would appear that whether the anti-free trade charge is being encouraged by Barack Obama, his cohorts are acting to impede trade. Unilaterally the USA seeks to impose it’s will on Canada.

What Adam has found interesting is that despite the US devotion to free enterprise it has some of the most restrictive and oppressive trade legislation in the world. Further, it pumps subsidies and pork into many areas on the most dubious of pretexts, whilst seeking to bully everybody else into accepting their often inferior products. It would appear that the US is adopting many of the tricks and subterfuges of other free trade scoundrels such as France in finding and creating non-tariff barriers.
