“Well, he would, wouldn’t he?”
“I think it is extremely insulting of Don Brash to even suggest the police would cover up crimes – what he is suggesting is there are professional high ranking police officers who might know about a crime and be prepared to lie about it and cover it up, a crime against the current government.“
Writer Nicky Hager quoted at Stuff on Don Brash’s desire for a commission of inquiry into the alleged theft of his emails. Some of these emails were used by Hager in his ‘book’ The Hollow Men.
Hager’s reaction reminds Adam of the famous or infamous quote attributed to Mandy Rice-Davies in respect of Lord Astor’s statement that he had never met her or been her lover. Ms Rice-Davies quipped ‘ “Well, he would, wouldn’t he?“.

So what is new about leaks?
Sources can be many and varied, and confidential.
The result has been an excellent book called “The Hollow Men” – which has drawn to the attention of all New Zealanders the frail nature of our democracy, the abuse of power, the role of the power play, manipulation of the media and public. Need I go on?
This book will be used by students of Political Science for many, many, years to come. We should thank both Nicky Hager and Don Brash for this legacy.
