Adam dreads to think what hyperbole the paper would use had Bill English brought down a really tough budget.

Yes, it struck me as a strange headline. What ever else it is as a budget, and it is being criticized on every side by those missing out on their particular handout, but a “slash and burn” budget it was not.
The Dom seems to have set itself against this government in a carping, hypocritical way. More fool them, but ultimately the press does have a lot of power to shape perceptions, witness Obama’s progress; best President eva if you only read the NYT for example.
Headline should have read “Lost Opportunity to get NZ back on its feet.”
Bill & John in my opinion have missed the boat with their wimpy budget.
It would have been the same headline. They had the photo and headline lined up well in advance as it was prety obvious that some things would have to be cut in the budget.
