Afghanistan and the Taliban- a gloomy prognosis

June 7, 2009

Christina Lamb in The Times writes on the Taliban and Afghanistan with input and views from a former Pakistani ISI officer responsible for training many Taliban and other insurgents. If her informant is correct then the prognosis is gloomy.

The content of the article though is not entirely surprising and the prognosis though gloomy may well be correct.

Of especial interest is the scorn Ms Lamb’s informant poured on the notion of a ‘moderate’ Taliban. Indeed, Adam has himself been of the mind that the concept of a ‘moderate’ Taliban is a fantasy indulged in by Western politicians looking a for a reason to cut and run from the situation.

I think Obama will cut and run, but cloak the running away with Blair like warm fuzzies and high sounding rhetoric.

Nobody in the West has the stomach to make a stand.

It *is* unwinnable now, with Petraeus’ strategies ignored in favour of boom boom to hopefully bring the Taliban to the table.

We probably need a generational effort there to turn the corner.
