They have learned nothing and forgotten nothing

June 14, 2009

In one of two articles in the HoS today Bill Ralston looks at lessons to be learned from the Mt Albert by-election.

Somewhat cynically he suspects neither major party will learn from their mistakes. Leading Adam to echo Talleyrand’s famously cynical statement in the title of this post.

Whilst he considers Melissa Lee was author of much of her own misfortune, he states the government, or more particularly the party organisation was at fault.

That is disturbing and National needs to get it’s parliamentary political management act together and that of the party organisation in the country.

Currently both appear lacking in some respects.

At the same time Ralston points out that Shearer’s holding one of the safest Labour seats in the country against a cack handed National candidate and campaign is not exactly a huge triumph.

That stupidity represents the squandering of political capital and assisted Labour and others to focus voters on resentment of the Supercity concept.

Ralston may have missed the point, the organization worked perfectly. One view would be that National knew they had lost even before starting and thus put little in the way of effort in given that they knew little good would come of it. This would seem to explain the known facts.
