Blog Direction
Adam has been reviewing the direction of The Inquiring Mind.
It has long been his intention to grow an international audience. In this respect much has been achieved. Depending on the metric counter NZ visitors are between 25% and 40% of Adam’s audience.
That leads Adam to wonder whether this is a NZ Blog, or a Blog with an NZ perspective.
Further Adam finds that so much of the NZ media fails to look at external issues.
Consequently Adam is considering reducing his NZ coverage, but before he does so, which is not yet a final decision, he wants to learn what his readership wants.
Adam’s inclination is to focus more on international issues in business, politics and arts and reduce the NZ coverage, unless it is meaningful.
Readers might ask what has engendered this self examination. It is relatively simple:-
- Bain
- Veitch
- Rugby
- Mt Albert
- L’Affaire Choudary
- Media bias
come to the top of the list.
Plus the lack of decent media. Followed up by the NZ xenophobia, tall poppy syndrome and assumption that the world revolves around NZ.
Let Adam know what you think.

so what’s this ‘l’affaire choudray’ stuff? I am just back in nz after a few weeks away so at first I thought i missed something earth shattering… until I saw that the msm were going on about some strikingly beautiful person and got suddenly bored by it all… keep on doing as you are Adam…….. Cheers
I use blogs as media filters so I don’t have to dredge through it myself. I have come to read your blog because of your international content. So full enthusiasm for that from me.
You are a must read for me too Adam.
PS – Whatever happened to the Saturday rant? Surely Adan didn’t run out of topics to rant about
I’m with the good MacDoctor. But please consider keeping such features as “The light dawns – reality bites” which this blogger particularly enjoys
Everybody
Thanks for the comments.
I am not going to consciously change anything. I am just going to let the blog continue to reflect what happens to take my attention at any particular time .
It has evolved over the last 17 months as I have looked at things.
I will therefore continue to let the blog reflect what I am interested in.
After all I blog for fun and it has been and continues to be fun.
Thanks again
If you focus on the items in the list (with the exception of rugby) you will rapidly come off my must read daily list. Leave them off and we can continue our happy relationship of focused blogger/happy reader.
I do like your habit of scanning letters to editor. it gives a wonderful flavour of what is consuming the average joe in nz without needing to read all the dross.
That said I agree with the comments about it being your blog and you should blog the things that interest you. Kotare at the Strategist is another intelligent thinker who occupies a wider audience
Phil
The list was not what I initended to focus on it was the nature of the media coverage that was causing me to think on direction.
I would blog on whatever interests you , personally, Adam. I suspect blogging to please an audience will take the pleasure out of blogging in short order.
I second (or should that be third?) Colin & Ed that it’s your blog and you should do what you want to with it.
That said, you have a point of difference with posts which cover more international issues than most (perhaps any?) other NZ blogs do.
Adam, It is your blog so you can do with it what you will but it is a must read for me. ‘specially the cartoons.
I’ve not been that interested in some the issues you identified as they have been nothing more than a ratings improvements exercise for the media participants but you have tended to deal with things taking the Emperor has no clothes approach, something I have appreciated.
Tall poppy syndrome ? I see it more that NZ’ers are far too willing to support too many mediocre acts, artists, writers, and others. Some truly clever people get rubbished, but often we seem to find an unhappy medium, over-hype the indifferent as an overreaction.
But, direction, to be fair Adam I’ve appreciated any and all of your musings. Blogs are personal taste, and although I may often have found your taste in cartoons a little acrid, I’ve always appreciated them. I think you should take where it interests you, otherwise it will cease to be something you want to do. International is often more interesting (Yes indeed), but what sort of perspective do you get from NZ ?
All the best with it anyway. You’ll stay on my favourites list for a while yet.
