Home truths on healthcare

August 18, 2009

The report of the review of health has drawn predictable commentary from all sides.

Murray Horn and his working party report are variously seen as Trojan Horses for an unreconstructed Douglas viewpoint or as the greatest thing since sliced bread, depending on where you sit in the political spectrum. Tony Ryall is being set up by some to assume the mantle of the devil incarnate.

Tony relax, for Barack Obama donned the garb before you if many in the USA are to be believed.

Yet the reality is much more prosaic and we would all do well to understand this.

Philip Stephens in this FT article explains why, whatever the system, we are all going to have to come to terms with limitations on what our healthcare systems can deliver, afford and promise.

Our politicians must front up to the reality and stop pretending.

At the same time we as a populace have to understand the realities as well.

Adam thinks this is a ‘Big Ask’ and suspects we the people and definitely the politicians will duck the issue, which will make the eventual resolution more painful.
