The Emperor has no clothes

October 10, 2009

Scrap the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s an embarrassment and even an impediment to peace. President Obama, in letting the committee award it to him, has made himself look vain, a fool and dangerously lost in his own mystique.

So begins an acerbic and to the point article at The Times by Bronwen Maddox.

Ms Maddox makes a number of good points, read the article it is well worth doing.

The comments made by Ms Maddox are even more pertinent when you read FULL TEXT OF OBAMA remarks on accepting the Nobel Prize for Peace.Arrogant in it’s presumption of American moral superiority and arrogant in presuming that American ideals are what we all aspire to, when in many respects America is a polarised and intolerant society

I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.

Then at the end patronizing and hypocritical

And that’s why this award must be shared with everyone who strives for justice and dignity — for the young woman who marches silently in the streets on behalf of her right to be heard even in the face of beatings and bullets; for the leader imprisoned in her own home because she refuses to abandon her commitment to democracy; for the soldier who sacrificed through tour after tour of duty on behalf of someone half a world away; and for all those men and women across the world who sacrifice their safety and their freedom and sometime their lives for the cause of peace.

for today Obama appears to recognize the Taliban, he sits down with Iran and cannot make a decision re Afghanistan

and then arrogant again:

That has always been the cause of America. That’s why the world has always looked to America. And that’s why I believe America will continue to lead

Who elected him Emperor? Has he never heard of China or India, does this naif really believe this nonsense. Just because some Norwegian committee had a rush of blood to the head does not render Obama ruler of the world.

Some humility is in order.

To Adam there is, in this situation, a set of circumstances very similar to the fairy tale of the Emperor’s New Clothes, the Nobel Committee are the confidence trickster tailors, many of the media and left are the fawning courtiers and it is left to those who still have minds of their own to play the role of the small child who blows the whistle on the scam.

I believe that it is more of a move to shed light on necessity rather than to make fun of the nobel institution. Establishing world peace is not something that should be measured only by decades of action. It is a mutual understanding by rational minds that world peace is the only “effective” blanket cure to all the problems in the world. To focus on the micro and institute insignificant change over a predetermined section of time is a failure in understanding this.

and still his followers will believe that he is fully clothed in a spectacular fashion, that we the ‘peasants’ are just to blind to see.
