Archiving the internet

March 6, 2010

Article in The Times on the launch by the British Library of their UK Web Archive.

The Library, which collects every periodical and book published in English, decided to extend its reach to cover the internet in 2004, when it was clear that the web’s evolution would inevitably mean that some sites would disappear.

At the launch in London last night, British Library Chief Executive Dame Lynne Brindley said, “The Library has worked directly with copyright holders to capture and preserve over 6,000 carefully selected websites, helping to avoid the creation of a ‘digital black hole’ in the nation’s memory.”

Would be interesting to know where the NZ National Library has got to with their strategy in this regard.

The US have their Internet Archive site and The Times has its own.

The National Library are doing quite well. They tried to take a snapshot of the NZ internet a couple of years ago and are about to do another one.

You’ll find some information and useful links about it here: http://www.natlib.govt.nz/services/legal-deposit-donations/web-archive
