The Tuhoe ‘deal’

May 14, 2010

Morning Report this morning has Brent Edwards speculating that Key has pulled rug from under Finlayson by spiking the Tuhoe ‘deal’.

Yet for the second time this week Mike Hosking states categorically that Finlayson was on ZB some 2 or 3 weeks ago saying clearly that Tuhoe was not going to get park ownership or many of the other elements of  deal supposedly floated in a TV3 news report.(Just over 40 + minutes into the MP3 file)

If Hosking is correct and why say it more than once if he is not, then Tuhoe should not have been surprised by Key’s statement. Indeed it suggests that Key may have acted because Tuhoe and their boosters may not have been listening/reading the signals being sent and hearing what they wished to hear.

In fact the dismay/anger may be more due to a desire to put pressure on National and reflect Tuhoe’s unwillingness to face up to the fact National was not going to grant their wishlist.

Ms Turia should reflect on how much Maori have gained under National as opposed to Labour and not keep stoking the fires, though some of that may be posturing for her constituency.

Radio NZ look as if their thesis that Finlayson was ‘coshed’ by Key is wrong.

UPDATE:- Roarprawn suggests that Tuhoe may have had a deal, but spoilt it all by crowing about it, (adam suggests in the media) before the deal could be ‘sold’ to the country. Thus they caused Key to spike it by being boastful .
