The Light Dawns – Reality Bites #84
As a consequence of the tax adjustments recently announced in the Budget, Friday’s Dominion Post presented an easy-to-read, comprehensive table showing the impact of these changes.
This table showed that, even on the lowest incomes, if someone were to spend all their net income, down to their very last cent, they could not be worse off. In addition, simple website calculators also verified this to be the case.
Those on higher incomes or who are able to not spend all their disposable income were shown to be comparatively a lot better off.
Therefore, I was staggered to see that a survey of readers showed that 41 per cent believed they would be worse off after the Budget. I have to assume that these people bypassed the table and headed straight for the sports section or comic strips.
It is, indeed, unfortunate that some readers seem incapable of interpreting the most simple of tables or able to enter some basic figures into a website.
I suggest that they revise their tabulations and really see if they are “worse off”. I would think it most unlikely.
