Mallard plays ‘gay card’
June 17, 2010
The Herald reports that Mallard is pleading for sympathy for Chris Carter.
Of course if it was a National MP under the gun, Mallard would be the first to lead the charge.
Total hypocrisy.
Mallard even plays the ‘gay card’:-
But there is no doubt that lots of people are putting an extra boot into Chris because he is gay.”
Surreal.
Trevor, people just think Carter is a freeloader with an inflated sense of entitlement.

It’s a remarkable transformation from Mallard, when only 8 months ago he was making derogatory comments across the House to an openly gay National MP …

Why not include the whole comment?
“I don’t accept the view that he is picked on because he is gay. He is picked on because there is a common view that he has travelled too much. But there is no doubt that lots of people are putting an extra boot into Chris because he is gay. One only has to look at Whaleoil (yes I did) or many comments on Kiwiblog to see the bile that homophobes are writing.”

“Why not include the whole comment?”
Adam’s blog; Adam’s choice
Indeed it is.
But if you want to argue “Trevor, people just think Carter is a freeloader with an inflated sense of entitlement.” it would be better if the person you’re arguing against hadn’t said “He is picked on because there is a common view that he has travelled too much.”
And if you want to argue he’s playing the “gay card”, removing the bit which says “I don’t accept the view that he is picked on because he is gay” just seems a tad dishonest.
Misleading selective quoting doesn’t reflect well on the quoter. I guess I’m hoping that Mr Smith will learn from this and do a better job in the future.
“Misleading selective quoting doesn’t reflect well on the quoter.”
Nor does accusing people with different political views to yours of homophobia, when the person making the accusation hasn’t exactly been an angel in that regard. Mallard is a hypocrite.
I think you mistake the sense of what Mallard wrote. I was not selective in the sense that you mean.
Mallard was quite clear that he thought a lot of people were kicking Carter because he was gay.
My point was that Mallard who is not without sin himself in this regard as I2 notes, was appearing to seek sympathy through saying that Carter attracted vitriol because he was gay.
There was no need to note the comment re Whaleoil or Kiwiblog, because my comment was not homophobe, as you seem to imply. It was that Mallard despite, his protestation, was in what he wrote seeking to evoke sympathy because of Carter’ s gay lifestyle choice.
Personally as one who has friends and sundry relativse who are gay, I have no problem with Carter being gay. I have a problem with his attitude and with him and others appearing to use his sexual orientation as a defence.
In my view the selected quote was apposite. I referenced Trevor’s piece so I was hardly stopping anyone reading the whole post made by Trevor.
In addition, in many respects I do not think Carter travelled too much, but I think he was careless about how he presented those travels and the insouciant attitude he adopted to criticism. A prime example limo usage in Australia. He appeared to be cavalier with Taxpayer’s money.
I assume that you seek to defend Carter, that is your right as it is mine to take an opposing view and to criticise Mallard’s defence.
by the way selective quotes, and I do not agree with your view on this in this instance, has been a form of attack/defence/argument from time immemorial.
