Colin Espiner looks at the Carter implosion

July 30, 2010

After a gap of some weeks Colin Espiner blogs on the Chris Carter implosion.

Like many others he looks at the background and the incredible stupidity of Carter’s actions, possibly the most telling comment though are Espiner’s closing words:-

Goff has acted quickly to hunt down the letter-writer and lop him off at the knees, as he had to do.

But he hardly had a choice. So blatant was Carter’s offence in every form of political discipline that it’s difficult to view it as anything other than an act of politicial suicide.

The wider question is how much collateral damage he causes on the way.

Especially that final sentence.

After all it is probably a political truism, but when Party Leaders give undertakings as Goff did last night on Close-Up that they will definitely be leading the party at the next election and their caucus is 100% behind them, you tend to think thay are on the skids. This is compounded when pretenders to the throne, Cunners, state their loyalty. You know instantly that their words are false.

Incidentally Espiner made this comment about Cunners:-

David Cunliffe would love to have a crack (and National would love him to, too) but the guy has a degree from Harvard and even his pomposity and self-regard isn’t so high that it would overrule his ability to ascertain that right now the leadership of the Labour Party is a poisoned chalice.

Hardly an endorsement. It is rumoured that Cunners is not loved in caucus.

If Cunliffe is their best option then they have even greater problems than I thought. He could take them to below 20% in the polls without even trying.
