Adam is sick and tired of…..

September 11, 2010

1.The misuse of language, especially by the media. He has complained before about the way in which journalists use the word unique.

When Adam was a boy, his teachers subscribed to the usage as follows:-

Unique is normally taken to describe an absolute state, i.e. one that cannot be qualified. Thus something is either unique or not unique; it cannot be rather unique or very unique. However, unique is sometimes used informally to mean very remarkable or unusual and this makes it possible to use comparatives or intensifiers with it, although many people object to this use

Adam is one of those who objects .

2. The way events are described as being ‘once in 750 years’. How the hell do we know?

3. The continued portrayal of the SCF situation as a bailout of the company. It was not. The government did not bail SCF out. The government let SCF go into receivership. The government met it’s obligations under the Deposit Guarantee Scheme and went further, so as to maximize  control over the receivership by securing a position as effectively the sole preferred creditor.

4. The refusal by the government to establish an inquiry into not just SCF, but the whole finance company mess.

5. Andrew Williams and his posturings

6. Jim Anderton

7. The so called Christian preacher in Florida and his media cavortings over the proposal to burn copies of the Koran

8. The media who gave him the oxygen of publicity

9. The populist politicians and others who weighed in on the issue with all sprts of comments, thus blowing the whole matter totally out of proportion

10. The Islamic zealots who take everything as an affront and whilst protesting that Islam is a peaceful, tolerant religion repeatedly go out of their way to demonstrate that it is not.

MacDoctor – you are correct it is the problem with a lazy media.

What they are referring to is a statistical evaluation. They really mean to say this event has a 1 in 750 chance of occuring this year. That is why it is possible for several ’1 in 500′ year floods to occur in one year.

Of course when the events of a certain magnitude occur more regularly, on a statistical basis, then the odds are simply reduced.

I believe “Once in 750 years” is lazy media shorthand for “Last happened 750 years ago”. Quite why it is necessary to change the latter to the former is beyond me.
