NZ – A police state?
Or it will be if Simon Power gets his way with the Search and Surveillance Bill. This gives the police, despite apparent judicial controls, immense powers to compel people to produce information on pain of draconian penalties.
Power is no liberal he is systematically setting up the structure of a police state under which people will have to respond to questioning or face prosecution and punishment even if uninvolved. His defence of the bill in the NZ Herald was not convincing. As the saying has it ‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions’
Power may be well intentioned but in the hands of others, this power is menacing, dangerous and wholly inappropriate.
Power’s legacy will be undemocratic electoral law and the ability for big brother to control the populace through the police.
In fact his bills are all of a pattern, along with Finlayson’s disgusting bill in respect of the Foreshore and Seabed. Finlayson another arrogant politican who is too clever by half .
Come back Beria your time has come again.
