NZ – A police state?

November 28, 2010

Or it will be if Simon Power gets his way with the Search and Surveillance Bill. This gives the police, despite apparent judicial controls, immense powers to compel people to produce information on pain of draconian penalties.

Power is no liberal he is systematically setting up the structure of a police state under which people will have to respond to questioning or face prosecution and punishment even if uninvolved. His defence of the bill in the NZ Herald was not convincing. As the saying has it ‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions’

Power may be well intentioned but in the hands of others, this power is menacing, dangerous and wholly inappropriate.

Power’s legacy will be undemocratic electoral law and the ability for big brother to control the populace through the police.

In fact his bills are all of a pattern, along with Finlayson’s disgusting bill in respect of the Foreshore and Seabed. Finlayson another arrogant politican who is too clever by half .

Come back Beria your time has come again.

    Robert

It is not my party right or wrong as it tends to be with many on the left, although I do not include you in this.

I have a brain and I think for myself.

National was in many ways the least worse of the options at the 2008 election, not the best.

Note, I attacked the last regime and I attack this one as well.

free thinking and freedom to promote that, is what democracy despite all it’s imperfections is about

I’m delighted to hear you say that Adam.
There are some aspects of this Government that are deeply disturbing and the rapid and severe erosion of our liberties as you describe above are at the top of the list. There are other significant changes that National have made, widely advertised on other blogs, that are serious cause for concern also. I’d never contend that Labour wasn’t guilty of similar behaviour but the situation created by the ministers, Prime and otherwise, of the National Party, are very concerning and not over yet.

And so Adam, you’re beginning to feel some anxiousness about the things this National government has done?
If so, have you begun to wonder what it is about them that allows these things to happen?
    I hope so.
