Auckland – Rip-off Central

January 2, 2011

A week in Auckland and Adam was glad to leave the land of no service, rip-off prices and inferior coffee.

His stay was prolonged by the fact he pulled a back muscle which meant driving, was for a couple of days, out of the question.

Auckland has many things in its favour, but the so called hospitality sector should take a long hard look at itself and wake-up.

if they carry on like this through the RWC then NZ will be seen as a country of very high priced, inferior service and poor quality experiences.

Adam will not hold his breath.

    Dunno about that Lynn.
In the areas I frequent, Kingsland and Sandringham, the coffee shops I frequent out of choice remained open over the break.
And the beer servery we frequent was open serving it’s fine product to the thirsty.

Actually you’re right. The pubs do stay open at a pretty significant cost. When I worked as a barman a few decades ago, it was really really really boring over the summer break. Even the drunks weren’t there. In fact for large periods of time I was the only one there.

Many of the night clubs shut down according to what I see up on K Rd.

But I was mainly referring to the eateries and cafes based on coffee (I was a bit caffeine deprived yesterday). I usually frequent about 5 cafes in Ponsonby based on good service over the years. Of those only one is open. Down at work, The Coffee Guy with his mobile expresso is on holiday and the local cafe are shut.

You have to ask yourself something – what type of hospitality business stays open from 25th to the 12th or 19th (when most of them reopen their doors and when Aucklanders come back from their break).

Ummmm – the answer is the bad ones and the brand new ones. The ones that have to stay open because they need every cent that they can get.

Auckland is DEAD over the summer break. In fact Auckland is really pleasant when half of the people are gone elsewhere. The only downside is that when I wandered along Ponsonby Road heading to work today I didn’t find any of my usual coffee haunts open. I was forced to try a new place which had appalling coffee. Scratch another off the list
