Mike Lee’s peculiar world

March 2, 2011

The NZ Herald looked at how the bill for Christchurch might be met.

Interestingly Auckland politicians such as Mike Lee still have their hands out for public largesse, yet why is  Auckland not prepared to fund these projects itself:-

The suggested halt on Auckland’s long-sought rail tunnel project predictably rang alarm bells last night with city councillors.

Transport committee chairman Mike Lee said a recovering Canterbury and the country would not be served by having “a weak stagnating Auckland”.

“Auckland must stay strong, Auckland must stay purposeful, Auckland must advance,” he said.

“I think there is a compelling need to help Canterbury within our means, but that doesn’t mean we down tools and stagnate.

“We have to keep marching on, but there has to be national leadership – I believe there has to be a national levy that every New Zealander, and not just Auckland, will pay.

Mr Lee said he was concerned that people might be using the Christchurch earthquake “to reinforce their own prejudices which we have seen on display for so many months” after the release of the business case and its compelling arguments for the rail link.

So Mr Lee from which money pit is the Govenrment to find the $ to deal with the Christchurch disaster and pay for your trasnport dreams.

Later today he was on the Jim Mora Labour love fest on Radio New Labour, where in a conversation with the panel Lee made Adam fear for Lee’s sanity, when even Jim Mora appears bewildered by a socialist’s comments you know there is an issue:-

  • Lee saw no real connection between proposed spend in Auckland and the need to rebuild Christchurch
  • Auckland should be paramount
  • Most bizarrely he thought the major issues in unemployment could be solved by proceeding to rebuild Christchurch and the Auckland CBD rail loop, the question of skilled labour seemed to be irrelevant

And we we wonder why so many poor decisions get made and why so much money is wasted.

Welcome to the wacky  world of Mike Lee

If they really thought the rail tunnel project was a good idea, they could run bus lanes along the route tomorrow. For a few more $$ they could fix the lights so the bus wasn’t interrupted.

But I guess that might show the project would be a waste of money.

A fast rail system out of CHCH would attract many paying customers at present. Lee represents the ghastly naivety of the left…if in doubt spend/tax/spend/tax/spend ad nauseam!

My suggestion for Canterbury is to look towards its surrounding towns for alternatives to the eternally soft ground underneath CHCH. Rangiora and Ashburton have sound infra-structures, Timaru has a credible port (with under-utilised capacity) while the likes of Amberley, Temuka and Geraldine are appealing dormitory towns. Canterbury is a large flat province and provided land is zoned aptly, manufacturing can be conducted in many localities away from CHCH. Private enterprise can follow leads to the surrounding towns and dick-brained socialists(like Lee) need never play a part.

Aaaaah, you see these guys all have at the bottom of the garden little pink pixies who spend their days printing money.

All they have to do is sell the airport shares and strike a special rate for Aucklanders.

B B B B but that won’t do because then Aucklanders will blame THEM for the extra cost. They want eberybody ELSE to pay for their grandiose schemes.
