An Inconvenient Truth or Matt McCarten’s Big Lie
In his latest diatribe, Matt McCarter – so called political columnist at the HoS in his rant stated in his attack on the government:-
But it was no problem for them to flick $1.8 billion to a few hundred South Canterbury Finance shareholders.
Thus continuing his constant war on business and the government.
The problem is that the statement was untrue. Totally untrue.
Yet as Goebbels was reputed to have said:-
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.
A quote that McCarten has undoubtedly taken to heart.
The government had little choice in the matter. SCF had been admitted into the deposit guarantee scheme by the previous government. SCF like other members of the scheme had paid premiums for the cover provided.
The cover was not to pay out shareholders, but Depositors. Depositors are not the company’s owners, shareholders are. However the truth does not suit McCarten as he wants to demonise the government and business in general.
So the money went to many thousands of depositors, not to shareholders, not to Allan Hubbard. These people were paid out because of a policy put in place by Michael Cullen to maintain confidence in the financial system at a time of global crisis.
How inconvenient for McCarten that the truth is so different from what he wrote.
Even worse is that the HoS did not have the article fact checked, so this ‘error’ was published.
Consequently can you believe anything you read in the NZ Herald?

Ugh. Getting so sick of the left attacking straw men.
Honestly, could we have some sort of rule that every once in a while they actually debated the position their opposites actually hold?
McCarten has taken another leaf from the Goebbels guide to spin:-
“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly – it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over”
McCarten hammers away all the time at a few points such that many now beleive his spin, witness the number of times the real facts are ignored and McCarten facts trotted out
McCarten also said this:
Given that the government categorically ruled out charging interest on stdent loans last week (the rights and wrongs of that pronouncement are another matter!), McCarten is once again being economic with the truth.
