Reacting to the announcement by Kosovo the Chinese Government issued a statement (TVNZ news has more) which read in part as

follows:

China was “deeply worried about the grave negative impact” Kosovo’s unilateral declaration would have on the region, it said, adding that the international community should create “positive conditions” for peace and stability.

This is possibly due to the attitude China takes to regions breaking off from a state, but may also reflect their attitude to self determination.

Will the NZ government follow China’s lead given the upcoming signing of the long sought free trade agreement.

Where stands the bauble man on this issue?
