Stab vests for doctors, nurses, teachers!

A depressing article on London, Adam’s home city for many years from the Financial Times – which included amongst other depressing comments the following:-

If dinner party natter three years ago was focused on London’s boom and all the good that the Olympics would bring, discussion has moved to more urgent issues like personal security, poor healthcare, feral youths, appalling schools, an under-funded defence force, a media diet of fame-focused rubbish and an exit strategy to board the next flight out.

A Swedish friend recently remarked that the UK government’s plan to distribute stab-proof vests to public service staff (nurses, doctors, teachers) to protect them in the line of duty was a sure sign that the nation was officially failing. While I wanted to stick up for life in London, I couldn’t have agreed more. London is by no means the UK, and the rest of the country certainly isn’t London, but the capital is still the hub that sets the agenda and the first port of call for most visitors (thus investors).

What has gone wrong?

10 years ago, it was not like this.

No longer look back in anger, but look on with despair and dread.
