Adam’s Hypocrite of the Week

December 4, 2010

Come down off your high horse Matt McCarten, for it is he who wins the award this week. McCarten castigator of so called ratbag employers for ripping off their workers. Yet what do we read this week:-

The Council of Trade Unions wants an explanation from Unite on why it failed to pay the IRD more than $36,000 in PAYE on behalf of its employees.

Unite, one of New Zealand’s largest unions, owed IRD over $130,000 for the year ended March 2009 (its most recent filing), including more than $57,000 in unpaid GST. For the same financial year its liabilities outweighed its assets by more than $170,000.

Unite head Matt McCarten confirmed yesterday that the union owed money to the IRD but said he had made choices to pay for union campaigns rather than clear the debt. “I don’t shy away from these decisions, I make the calls.”

So McCarten that champion of spending other people’s money via taxation, has now decided to take the direct route and cut out the IRD as middleman. He merely takes the money and spends it.

Here is the money quote:-

Matt McCarten confirmed yesterday that the union owed money to the IRD but said he had made choices to pay for union campaigns rather than clear the debt. “I don’t shy away from these decisions, I make the calls.”

Yet if any nasty capitalist running dog employer did this McCarten would be the first demanding prosecution and that the full force of the state be brought down upon the head of the offending employer.

So Matt, Adam thinks you should be brought to account too by the state for your appalling behaviour and for using your employees money, deducted to pay taxes, in pursuit of your political fantasies.

The least you are is a hypocrite, no doubt others will have other views.

McCarten never has had any credibility. I am just waiting for him now to say that we are picking on him only because he is a Maori.

Oh dear. Some wag on Kiwiblog yesterday suggested that Unite staff should join a union to protect them from their scurrilous employer. McCarten has destroyed his own credibility.
