An American Classic 1: Porgy & Bess – 2002 Lincoln Center

The first in an occasional series of whatever takes Adam’s fancy, but constrained to America, good, bad and indifferent.

However, Porgy and Bess is probably one of the best places to start. Gershwin was a great composer and showman. In this opera he created a superb evocation of time and place. This production  enables us to see that.

Back in the 1980s my wife and I saw a revival on Broadway, but this is much better

This 2002 Lincoln Center Production of George Gershwin’s PORGY AND BESS is a fine recreation of the famous 1976 Houston Grand Opera’s PORGY AND BESS…with the great John DeMain conducting, who was also the conductor with the Houston Grand Opera’s production.. keeping the tempos correct, with Gershwin’s FULL orchestration.
