Adam Rants: The degradation of NZ Media is made very clear with this statement re trial of Tarrant

02/05/2019

This is worrying on a number of levels

Firstly, it seems that the media will no longer name the accused – why? Have they yielded to pressure from Ardern?

Secondly, do we now have a media cartel that decides what will be reported?

Who is monitoring this? Is it legal? If this media approach continues, what will we see next, uniform reporting and no questioning?

Just what is the new role of The Fourth Estate in Ardern’s NZ. Have Ardern Little, Ghahraman, Wall achieved their objectives without the need for legislation or debate. It seems that NZ media is now the little lapdog of the government.

Thirdly whilst the alleged shooters seems to be a particularly awful person, why is our news being filtered? It is perhaps ironic that this report comes out just after the latest World Press Freedom Index was published, where NZ was at seventh a rise from last years rating. This approach by NZ’s media seems rather at odds with the concept of press freedom.

From NZ Herald – not behind paywall

New Zealand media have agreed on protocols for reporting the trial of the man accused of the Christchurch mosque shootings.

While major news outlets have agreed to “comprehensively and responsibly” report the case, this will include limits on promoting white supremacy ideology.

This would extend to the contents of a manifesto shared on the internet by the accused gunman before the March 15 shootings.

The gunman, 28, faces 50 murder charges and 39 counts of attempted murder.

The following protocols have been agreed to by NZME (publisher of the Herald), RNZ, TVNZ, MediaWorks and Stuff, for the coverage and reportage of the trial:

• We shall, to the extent that is compatible with the principles of open justice, limit
any coverage of statements, that actively champion white supremacist or terrorist
ideology.

• For the avoidance of doubt the commitment set out at [above] shall include the accused’s manifesto document “The Great Replacement”.

• We will not broadcast or report on any message, imagery, symbols or signals
(including hand signals) made by the accused or his associates promoting or
supporting white supremacist ideology.

• Where the inclusion of such signals in any images is unavoidable, the relevant parts
of the image shall be pixellated.

• To the greatest extent possible, the journalists that are selected by each of the
outlets to cover the trial will be experienced personnel.

These guidelines may be varied at any time, subject to a variation signed by all
parties.

• This Protocol shall continue in force indefinitely.

“We are also mindful of our role as the “eyes and ears of the public” in the context of court reporting. In this instance, we acknowledge the particular importance of this function, given the many victims’ friends and families outside New Zealand who may otherwise be unable to engage in the trial process,” the NZ Media Freedom Committee said in a statement.

“We are aware that the accused may attempt to use the trial as a platform to amplify white supremacist and/or terrorist views or ideology.”

The self appointed NZ Media Freedom Committee, an Orwellian description if ever there was one, said:

“We are also mindful of our role as the “eyes and ears of the public” in the context of court reporting. In this instance, we acknowledge the particular importance of this function, given the many victims’ friends and families outside New Zealand who may otherwise be unable to engage in the trial process,” the NZ Media Freedom Committee said in a statement.

So if you are the eyes and ears – why are you censoring what we see and hear?

You are despicable hypocrites, masquerading as a free press. Disgusting!

Just to be clear this rant is about how the media have become toadies of the government. Personally I have no desire to read the so called manifesto etc,but I consider this so called NZ Media Freedom Committee to be a step down the slippery slope to restrictions on what we see, read and hear.

A very good rant, I thank you. Last night I read posts on a site that openly names, praises Tarrant & runs videos of the killings. Our PM has caused this over the top problem by refusing to name Brenton Harrison Tarrant. Media are complicit and are adding to this problem IMHO.
