NZ Cannabis Referendum – #6: The Detail – a podcast from RNZ/ Newsroom:

18/05/2019

A Podcast from RNZ and Newsroom

If Chris Wilkins has his way, New Zealanders will vote yes to legalising recreational cannabis in next year’s referendum and the money raised from sales would go to local communities: Sports and arts groups, and drug treatment programmes.

Dr Wilkins is an associate professor at Massey University, heading the drug research unit. He’s been looking at the drug market, drug use and drug policy, for 20 years.

The government last week announced the details for the 2020 cannabis referendum. Voters will have a simple yes/no question based on draft legislation.

The topics are getting better

According to Newsroom,

Newsroom has been commissioned by the RNZ/NZ On Air Innovation Fund to produce a new daily news podcast designed to explain the stories behind the headlines.

Called ‘The Detail’, it aims to help listeners dive deeper into the big stories to help give an understanding of what’s really going on. We will pick out the news that matters and explain it in detail and in context.

The Detail will be fronted by journalists Sharon Brettkelly and Alex Ashton, and produced by Alexia Russell. We will be drawing on not only Newsroom’s award-winning journalists, but the best reporters from throughout the country; along with experts in their fields.

This seems to be another entry in the pro-cannabis campaign. Yet as yet nobody seems to know what operating approach will be implemented. therefore whilst useful as a contribution to debate, we still have no idea as to the approach to be adopted, plus I fear a black market will persist.
