The Detail – a podcast from RNZ/ Newsroom: How NZ media plan to report the news but block the propaganda

A Podcast from RNZ and Newsroom

From my perspective I think there are major issues here regarding media manipulation and possible political pressure on media and courts.

I would refer readers to this post

The not-guilty plea of the man accused of the Christchurch mosque shootings, while harrowing for the victims’ families, came as no big surprise to most in the media and legal fraternity.

News organisations have been expecting the denial, and prepared a set of guidelines for how they plan to cover the trial, should it eventuate. Together, editors developed a set of mutually agreed protocols with the aim of reducing the accused’s ability to use media coverage to spread a message of white supremacy.

Newsroom.co.nz Christchurch reporter David Williams said covering next year’s court process presents a huge challenge for editors and their publications.

We will see what happens at the time. In addition it will be interesting to see how overseas media cover the trial and whether there will be blocks placed on NZ access. That would be unacceptable from my perspective.

According to Newsroom,

Newsroom has been commissioned by the RNZ/NZ On Air Innovation Fund to produce a new daily news podcast designed to explain the stories behind the headlines.

Called ‘The Detail’, it aims to help listeners dive deeper into the big stories to help give an understanding of what’s really going on. We will pick out the news that matters and explain it in detail and in context.

The Detail will be fronted by journalists Sharon Brettkelly and Alex Ashton, and produced by Alexia Russell. We will be drawing on not only Newsroom’s award-winning journalists, but the best reporters from throughout the country; along with experts in their fields.
