Room for Thought: #7 – Douglas Carswell talks with Mahyar Tousi: YouTube star, Iran-born, British bred, Brexit campaigner

03/08/2019

Carswell is somewhat of a maverick, plus he is a committed supporter of Brexit. However, I believe in looking at a variety of viewpoints. In addition, a number of his interviewees are quite interesting – whether you or I might agree with them is another matter.

Over 2 million people have watched his videos, on everything from the state of Brexit and Britain to Corbyn and the Iranian regime.

How has Mahyar built up such a following? How did coming to Britain from Iran make him appreciate his adopted country? What does the future hold for Britain after Brexit? And for freedom in Iran?

From Wikipedia

John Douglas Wilson Carswell (born 3 May 1971) is a British former Member of Parliament who in 2014 became the first elected MP for the UK Independence Party (UKIP),[1] representing Clacton.[2] From March 2017 to May 2017 (when Parliament was prorogued), he sat as an independent.[3]

As a member of the Conservative Party, Carswell was elected as the MP for Harwich in 2005 and Clacton in 2010. In August 2014, he changed his political allegiance to UKIP and announced his resignation as an MP, thereby necessitating a by-election in which he stood and was returned as a UKIP MP. He explained that he was joining UKIP out of a desire to see “fundamental change in British politics” and because he believed “many of those at the top of the Conservative Party are simply not on our side. They aren’t serious about the change that Britain so desperately needs.”[4] In 2016 Carswell admitted that he had “jumped ship with the express goal of changing the image of UKIP and ensuring that it was an asset rather than a liability in the referendum campaign…to decontaminate the brand”.[5] He left the UK Independence Party on 25 March 2017, to sit as an independent MP.[6][7] He did not stand at the 2017 general election.[8]
