The head of Stats NZ has resigned following the release of a report into the botched 2018 online census. The census – which was conducted online for the first time – has been heavily criticised as a disaster by some demographers.

It a low response rate, and the government agency has having to fill in the gaps with information from government records. Our political reporter Jo Moir has been at a new conference in Wellington.
