First off, Cassandra was right. Troy was destroyed. Though a combination of myth and history, it underlies this paper as it the primal example in Western Civilization.
It is fine to cite examples to bolster your ” thesis” and of course you took the worst possible one of Nongqawuse to share though. Thank you for being fair and balanced.
The threat I perceive as most serious is that the fallout from climate change will create, in the words of a European Defense analysis, ” nervous nation states with weapons of mass destruction.” These studies come from military analysts who have studied history and know very well climates can cause conflict and war and now the climate problems are global with and weapons of mass destruction are also. Serious alarm is in order. Not to frighten, but to affect political action.
The urgency did not have to be that we have now. That is not Greta’s fault however.
In 1951, the Paley commission advised the Truman and then Eisenhower administration that due due the political problems on many oil producing areas like the Middle East we should both diversify with Nuclear and Solar. Well nuclear got the all the money and not a cent for solar for 2 main reasons. Since we had used atomic weapons in WW2 in is imperative for us to develop ” peaceful” nuclear energy before the Soviets did and gain a huge propaganda victory. And of course, nuclear was the choice for Corporate America as it would centralize economic and politcal power. So one opportunity was lost. But the with the creation of the EPA in the 70’s and Carter’s strong push towards conservation, renewables and efficiency we were on the right track but that was stopped by the next president and so the chances were there and no more serious action must be taken which of course means not every choice or policy will be right, but the urgency to act is crucial and it can be blamed on the road not taken, we had our chances, we knew and we failed. Blame our generation( baby boomer 1956) not Greta. She had led a movement and has led by example and being a vegan and not flying, both important
and yacht-gate just shows how all of us struggle to meke the best decisions on how to interact with the Earth.
A little philosophy to end it. Had written a little piece last year comparing the change to renewables to the Greek philospoher’s Xeno’s paradox of motion. An arrow cannot reach the bullseye since before it gets there, it has to get halway there and halfway there before that, ad infinitum. And so with a sustainable future both ecologically and politically Since we are not there now, we will never be.Motion or progress is an illusion is hoisted on the public, Xeon’s paradox diabolically used. And it will be a battle as the most potent political force in the world are the petro-states, their politically and military power, and the fossil fuel corporations and financial institutions that back them. This seemingly well written piece plays right into their hands.
