Oxford Union: This House Believes That We Are All Feminists – #7/8 – Dame Tessa Jowell – For

17/08/2019

Dame Tessa Jowell begins by saying that her position on the matter has changed on the matter. She says that global gender equality has a long way to go as there is still female genital mutilation in Somalia, rape in India and there are bans on women’s freedoms in many Islamic countries.

She says that there needs to be steps breaking down the stereotypes of feminists being metropolitan middle class women who read The Guardian. She wants to promote choice for women and she wants this to happen through feminism. She mentions her constituency in south London and she believes that a young girl from Brixton can dream of an undergraduate place at Oxford University and this dream would be more optimistic if she were a feminist.
