Oxford Union: The EU is a Threat to Democracy – #1/6 – Kostas Chryssanthopoulos – For

18/08/2019

Came across this and it is very pertinent given Brexit and some of the speakers in the debate.

The speaker in this video is a competitive debater, and therefore the views expressed may not necessarily represent their beliefs.

Kostas Chryssanthopoulos argues that the European Union is a threat to democracy.

Kostas Chryssanthopoulos opened the case for the proposition by proudly stating that he is a Europhile. However, for him there iss no question that the EU threatened democracy, as he cites the lack of governmental transparency created by the organisation’s infamous bureaucracy. He furthers his case by claiming that France and Germany’s combined influence make it impossible to overturn a decision in their mutual interest. He concludes by saying that although this threat is real, it is necessary, as the only alternative is to destroy the individuality of member states, by centralising power further.
