BBC Newsnight: US election: Is this set to be the most contested election?

November 02, 2020

US President Donald Trump says he’s preparing for legal challenges once the polls close, so how confident can Americans be that their ballots will be counted fairly and in full? US President Donald Trump and his reelection campaign have signalled they will pursue an aggressive legal strategy to try to prevent Pennsylvania — a key election battleground — from counting mailed ballots that are received in the three days after the election. As the president refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the election, is it democracy that is on the ballot this time round? Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis reports from Pennsylvania — the cradle of American democracy, where the US’ founding fathers signed the declaration of independence and later the constitution.

Newsnight is the BBC’s flagship news and current affairs TV programme – with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.
