Irish resistance to conscription had dealt a heavy blow to the British administration and in May of 1918 they tried to remove the leadership of Sinn Féin and nationalist organisations like the GAA. Using the arrival of an Irish soldier who had defected to Roger Casement’s Irish Brigade in Germany they moved to intern 150 people. While the operation was a success it would backfire in the long term
