Part 9 of the Gettysburg series. Gettysburg. This titanic battle that ended with over 50,000 combined casualties for the Union and Confederates and completely turned a town inside out began with a single shot on the Chamberburg Pike on the morning of July 1, 1863.

Much has been made of the heroic actions of Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine during the Battle of Gettysburg. What many may not realize is that an almost identical action took place on the opposite end of the Union line with David Ireland and the 137th New York Regiment. In this episode, we’re exploring this lesser known story from Culp’s Hill that was pivotal to the success of the Army of the Potomac during the Battle of Gettysburg.
