Four Corners: Person of Interest – How police investigating the disappearance of William Tyrrell targeted the wrong man

November 4, 2019

In this Four Corners exclusive, the washing machine repairman who became the chief suspect in the disappearance of William Tyrrell – one of Australia’s biggest child abduction mysteries – speaks out.

William Tyrrell was just three years old when he vanished. Dressed in a Spiderman suit, the little boy had been playing in the front yard of a family home. Police initially treated his disappearance as a missing person case, before zeroing in on Bill Spedding as their key ‘Person of Interest’.

In this program, we show how this single-minded approach led to a raft of mistakes and missed opportunities in the investigation. In August, evidence at a coronial inquest finally delivered his vindication with key elements of his alibi finally proven.

Now you will hear from Bill Spedding and his wife about how the five-year ordeal has shattered their lives.
