Spectator TV: By-election special: Is Boris heading for a 1997 moment?


Nobody quite expected the extent of the losses the Conservative party suffered at the two by-elections in the UK today. But tactical voting from voters (leaning towards the Labour party in Wakefield and the Liberal Democrats in Tiverton and Honiton) meant that the Tories were roundly defeated. Within moments of the news, the Tory party chairman Oliver Dowden resigned with a stinging letter, leaving no doubts as to who he personally blamed for the loss of these seats.
