The Wall Street Journal has an extremely interesting article on polling and why people lie in their responses.

The article may help understand variances seen between polling responses and the results which actually occur.

Obviously the position varies somewhat in New Zealand, but Adam would suspect that the overall issues on peoples behaviour do not vary much from that seen in the US.
